Post #22 of our Build Flows Faster series covering our new utility actions for Power Automate. Today’s lesson is splitting a text value by a specified value with Power Automate with Encodian utility actions.
Our utility actions are targeted at helping you build flows more quickly with less complexity, and they brilliantly only use 0.05 actions from your Encodian Flowr and Vertr subscription allowance. For example, under a standard plan that permits 500 actions per month (uses), you could use the utility actions 10,000 times!
Our ‘Split Text‘ utility action for Power Automate splits the text value (also referred to as a string) on the specified value and split configuration, returning an array of text values. The action provides the following ‘Split On’ options, which controls how the text value is split:
The action also provides the ‘Trim Values’ option, which sets whether the split text values should be ‘trimmed’ (removing whitespace at the start and end), whilst the ‘Remove Empty Values’ option controls whether blank values should be automatically removed from the string array returned by the action.
As with many of our utility actions, there are many scenarios where you may need to split a text value. Therefore, we’ll focus on how the ‘Split Text‘ utility action works instead of focusing on a specific scenario.
Consider the following basic and manually triggered flow:
Upon triggering the flow, the user will be prompted for two values:
Let’s configure the flow to process the values provided and then add each text value in the array provided to a SharePoint list:
1. Add the ‘Split Text‘ utility action
1.a Text: Select the ‘Text‘ property provided by the trigger action
1.b. Split Value: Select the ‘Split Value‘ property provided by the trigger action
1.c. Split On: Select ‘All’
2. Add the SharePoint ‘Create item‘ action
2.a. Site Address: Select the relevant SharePoint site
2.b. List Name: Select the target list name
At the time of writing: For the following step, we recommend using the ‘Old Designer’ as there is a bug with the new designer where the ‘For each’ action will be configured incorrectly. This is not specific to Encodian; it’s just a bug with the new (preview) Power Automate designer.
2.c. Title: Select the ‘Result Item‘ property provided by the ‘Split Text‘ utility action
NOTE: This will automatically place the SharePoint ‘Create item‘ action in a ‘For each’ loop because the ‘Result’ property provided by the ‘Split Text‘ utility action is an array (One or more).
Execute the flow with the following example values:
Upon execution, the following items would have been added to the target SharePoint list:

UPDATE: We’re excited to announce some significant updates to Flowr for Power Automate! As of October 2024, we’ve improved by updating action names and splitting Flowr’s central Power Automate connector into nine specialized connectors. These changes will make your workflow faster, smoother, and more efficient. The new action names are more precise and intuitive, saving you time, while the focused connectors enhance performance and flexibility. This update also helps future-proof the platform for even more powerful features. Check out our updated action names blog.
